As stated in the last blog, this blog covers the similarities between Hurricanes Helene and Milton. They share several similarities, particularly in their intensity and rapid development.
- Rapid Intensification:
Hurricane Helene and Milton experienced periods of rapid intensification(a process where a storm’s wind speeds increase significantly over a short period). Milton rapidly intensified to a Category 5 storm in just 24 hours. Helene also experienced rapid strengthening during the Atlantic.
- Category 5 Strength:
Both storms reached Category 5 status at their peak, making them part of a rare group of the most powerful hurricanes. Milton hit 180 mph winds, while Helene’s peak winds were slightly lower but still extremely powerful.
- Path in the Atlantic:
Both storms spent significant time developing and strengthening over the warm Atlantic waters, where sea surface temperatures and low wind shear allowed them to reach their maximum strength.
